There’s a line from the book ‘Forest Gump’ that goes, “Don’t own nothin’ if you can help it. If you can, even rent your shoes.” It sounds funny, but like most of the hero’s philosophies, it’s actually quite profound. And more relevant than ever in these days of companies contracting out ‘overhead’ to focus just on the valuable core product or service they provide.
At least that’s what the smart businesses are doing.
The ones that are really leveraging the stuff they excel at.
Sure, companies still need people to build and support their websites, provide HR services, manage their projects, conduct training, do accounting and bookkeeping, or run their offices. But none of this work needs to be done in-house – not only can it be outsourced, but it can be done by a professional service firm located virtually anywhere. And only when it’s needed: a workforce that can be flexed up – or down – as it’s required.
If you don’t have the time, talent or resources to staff these activities out to, then give that work away to somebody who does. Think how awesome your company would be if you only had to do the stuff you’re REALLY good at. Now THAT’s a valuable and profitable business!
So are you going to keep struggling to stay ahead of the curve? Are you going to stay so buried in day-to-day admin that you can never get to the strategic work that could truly explode your business? Are you still trying to do it all?
Or are you ready to unload your ‘overhead’ and really start rockin’ it in your business market!
Keeping it real,
Deb
